If you have an interest in language and culture, we offer a range of single honours and joint honours degree courses to choose from.

Our courses

Languages and cultures

You’ll develop a high level of proficiency in your chosen language(s) as well as a comprehensive understanding of the cultures that shape them or are shaped by them.

All our languages can be studied from Elementary or Upper Elementary level so don’t worry if you haven’t got previous experience of studying your chosen language or an A level in the subject.

These are the languages we currently teach, though the combinations of which languages are available vary depending on the degree you choose.

If you choose to study our Modern Languages (BA) programme, you can choose up to 2 of the languages unless you choose Chinese, which cannot be studied with another language.

Explore the full programme structures for our BA in Modern Languages, including the module pathways you would study per language.

Combine languages with other subjects

A joint honours degree is the perfect option if you’d like to combine your interest, either staying with a subject you’ve previously studied or trying something new. We offer joint programmes with humanities and social sciences subjects. Currently, these can be combined with French, Chinese or Spanish only.

If you choose to study a joint honours programme, you’ll spend your third year abroad, either working and/or studying.

Translation

We also offer specialist translation programmes which provide you with practical, professional translation skills and in-depth language tuition alongside the opportunity to gain an excellent command of 2 modern languages*. Our Translation degrees are available as 3 or 4-year programmes of study.

Explore the full structure of our translation degrees to see the modules you'll study.

If you choose to study 2 languages on your Translation Degree, you cannot select 2 Elementary language modules. To study 2 languages on our Translation Degree, you must be able to study a minimum of one of your language choices at Upper Elementary level (A level or equivalent).
