Placements
Work-based learning can be an integral part of developing the skills and experience needed to succeed within the competitive job market.
We are committed to providing you with the opportunity to undertake work placements during your studies that are relevant to the languages you are learning and the skillsets you have developed while being at the School of Modern Languages.
Year abroad
In your third year of study you will undertake a year abroad* in a chosen country or countries, with the option of either studying at one of our partner universities or undertaking a work placement**.
Should you choose the work placement option you will receive support from the School in sourcing a suitable work placement, with some opportunities available exclusively for students at the School of Modern Languages

Student teaching scheme
We provide you with the opportunity to gain experience in teacher training via an optional module in your final year.
The Student Teaching Scheme (as part of the Student Teaching module) allows you to work in local secondary schools and teach pupils who are learning foreign languages.
You will have the opportunity to observe teaching by professionals, take part in classroom activities and generate new learning materials.
This in turn enhances your ICT, presentation, preparatory and organisational skills and, ultimately, your employability.
Should you wish to pursue a career in teaching this valuable experience can be used to feed into your PGSE application. You will also have the opportunity to take a dedicated (optional) training session for PGSE applications with an expert in the field.
* Does not include 3-Year BA Translation
** Does not apply to: LLB Law and French; or any course where the only language of study is Japanese or Chinese.
