Research themes

Our research is organised around the themes of patient and family experience, thrombosis, safe and effective care, and bereavement

Patient and family experience

This research is grounded in the patient and family perspective, including views and experiences of healthcare professionals. It focuses on decision support for treatment decisions in advanced disease, death literacy, and monitoring real-time participant experience in clinical trials.

Patient experience often challenges assumptions we make in our clinical trials about patient preference and need, and we are approached by trials units all around the country to lead this work for them.

Thrombosis

This research, led by Professor Simon Noble, focuses on the importance of the prevention, treatment, and management of venous thromboembolism (VTE), blood clots, in advanced cancer.

Safe and effective care

Led by Professor Andrew Carson-Stevens, this research aims to create a sustainable environment for translational impact, to create inclusive descriptions of End-of-Life Care (EOLC) delivery, and to mobilise evidence and prepare for change.

Bereavement

The Bereavement theme, led by Dr Emily Harrop, aims to improve access to appropriate support, provide evidence on what support works best and for whom, and provide tools for research and practice. This research looks to provide consistency and quality in information-giving and offers of appropriate support as well as the optimisation of service design and delivery post-pandemic.

Our bereavement research has influenced the UK Commission on Bereavement and Welsh Government Bereavement Framework.
