Study abroad

Studying abroad gives you the chance to meet new people and form friendships and connections that can last a lifetime.

Why study abroad?

Studying abroad allows you to deepen and broaden your understanding of politics and international relations by studying in a different country and approaching your studies through other cultural and intellectual lenses. Studying abroad may not only benefit and enrich your studies, but it also offers a significant personal and professional development opportunity, as you will experience living in a different country and studying in a different culture, which may grow your confidence and independence. Many employers look for graduates with the wider experiences and intercultural sensitivity that a year of study abroad can provide.

Where can I study abroad?

The politics and international relations department currently has study abroad partnerships with a number of European universities in Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany, and the Czech Republic. Outside of Europe, the USA, Australia, Hong Kong and Canada are examples of countries where we have sent students previously. These non-European destinations are subject to change each year, so students are encouraged to check with the School for an updated list of destinations. Studies are undertaken in English.

Who can apply and what is the process?

Students on either the single honours Politics (L200), International Relations (305Q), or International Relations and Politics (BSc Econ) L290 degree programmes can apply to study abroad during their second year. Applications will be submitted at the end of semester 1, Year 2, and decisions will be made early in the following semester.

Choosing to take the year abroad means your degree will lengthen from 3 years to 4 years. If your application is successful, your degree will become a Bachelors with a Year of Study Abroad and you will spend your third year at the partner university, returning to Cardiff for your fourth year and final year.
