Study abroad

Studying abroad gives you the chance to meet new people and form friendships and connections that can last a lifetime.

Why study abroad?

Living and learning in a different country develops transferable skills that are prized by employers. These can include:

  • international, European and cross-cultural perspectives in the study of law
  • cultural adaptability and resilience
  • language skills and cultural awareness
  • independence and responsibility
  • social and communicative skills
  • intercultural communication

Depending on your choice of country, you may be able to learn a language or brush up on existing language skills.

Where can I study abroad?

The law department currently has study abroad partnerships with universities in Madrid (Spain), Prague (Czech Republic), Munster (Germany), and Florida (USA). Studies are undertaken in English.

Who can apply and what is the process?

Law students on the M100 programme can apply to study abroad during their second year. Applications will be submitted at the end of the second year and a decision will be made by the following February.

Choosing to take the year abroad means your degree will lengthen from 3 years to 4 years.  If your application is successful, your degree will become an LLB in Law with a year of study abroad and you will spend your third year at the partner university, returning to Cardiff for your fourth year and final year.
