Huntington’s disease: walkers in Wales

The aim of this project was to develop a self-sustaining community of Huntington’s disease (HD) walkers in Wales.

Our walking group was co-produced by people with HD, the Huntington’s Disease Association care advisor and Let’s Walk Cymru.

The group was supported, by our academic staff from the School of Healthcare Sciences, weekly for eight weeks and fortnightly for 12 weeks. Walks were facilitated around the Cardiff area.

Watch the people involved in the project share their experiences.

Reach

Huntington’s Disease is estimated to occur in 12:100,00 people in England and Wales. Three people attended the walking group and walked with a second group set up in Gwent supported by healthcare professionals.

Impact

All participants reported an increase in their level of activity during the project and as a consequence a walking group has subsequently been set up at a Residential home in Bridgend with the help of a Cardiff University BSc Physiotherapy student.
