World Sepsis Day: awareness and treatment
World Sepsis Day 2018 had the aim of raising awareness of sepsis worldwide.
We participated in World Sepsis Day with staff and students holding an information stall in the Cochrane library. Working in partnership with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, we also visited clinical areas, raising awareness and highlighting detection and treatment innovations.
Reach
Students and staff directly spoke to approximately 500 members of the public, healthcare staff and students.
Through social media the #TeamCardiffNursing messages were viewed by over 17,500 people including global interactions with the US and Philippines. Nationally interactions were from health boards and senior figures within healthcare. There were 130 retweets and 230 likes of posts from School of Healthcare Sciences students and staff.
Impact
Raising the awareness of sepsis with the public has the potential to save lives and is currently a ‘hot topic’ in health and social care worldwide.
This event allowed us to engage with the public and other healthcare professionals, increasing their knowledge of sepsis and important transferable skills related to knowledge exchange and communication which will be vital in their future careers as clinicians.
