Our Strategic Partnership Agreement with UNICAMP, one of Latin America's leading universities, was signed in December 2018 and renewed in August 2023.
Sustained collaboration between UNICAMP and Cardiff University (CU) over the last decade (a partnership which developed into a Strategic Partnership) has brought significant growth and consolidation to:
- research links and mobility of staff between our institutions,
- successful pivoting to online engagement when travel was restricted,
- delivery of a considerable portfolio of joint research projects and visiting fellowships,
- progress with pursuing external funding opportunities together,
- the development of a successful student mobility programme.
Partnership Impact
This partnership has given rise to a series of research focused visits, bringing some 100 staff across the two institutions in contact with each other, and further growth in joint publications, grant applications and mobility. Explore some of our exciting collaborative projects below:
About UNICAMP
The Universidade Estadual de Campinas, commonly known as Unicamp, was established in 1966 and is a major powerhouse of Brazil’s science and innovation. A omprehensive, public research university based in the São Paulo state region, it has affiliate campuses in both Limeira and Paulínia.
UNICAMP is comprised of 24 Academic Schools and c40,000 students.
UNICAMP’s key institutional values are Sustainability, Inclusion and Diversity, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship.
UNICAMP is consistently ranked amongst the top universities in Brazil and Latin America. It is Brazil’s 3rd largest university by their research publications output and the top university in Brazil for number of patents.
Their logo, a white ball, within the 13 stripes that represent the São Paulo flag, is the symbol of unity, a great meeting point for personnel and especially human knowledge, symbolised by the three red circles: Sciences, Exact Sciences and Humanities. Acting together, these three areas of knowledge radiate to the community, fulfilling the three functions of the University: Teaching, Research and Extension.
Student Exchange
Cardiff University and UNICAMP have an active student exchange agreement in place.
Student Exchange Agreements enable the reciprocal exchange of students for a semester or year of study or research abroad at the partner institution.

Cardiff-UNICAMP Partnership Fund
As part of our strategic partnership with Universidade Estadual de Campinas (UNICAMP), a mobility fund has been established to support outward academic visits to develop research, education and professional services collaborations between the institutions.
The fund will support applicants to develop collaborative research, teaching and professional services projects that have clear outcomes and a pathway to develop and sustain the collaboration.
