Aim: to reach new project partners, potential bid partners, to promote PLACE research
Audience: Agri-food industry, Welsh/UK Government
The global food system is facing unprecedented challenges, with huge implications for health, environment and economy. But shifting contexts in the UK present producers, processors and retailers with positive opportunities. How can these be harnessed to create new synergies between sustainable consumption and production, potentially setting agri-food onto more secure and sustainable paths?
Our work on agri-food and rural development considers production and consumption as connected, in place-based systems founded in nature and biodiversity. It has had significant impacts on policy development and debates concerning agri-food, designated landscapes and rural development at Wales, UK and EU levels.
Working with actors across the food system our research explores innovative new ways of addressing these challenges, and realising a more socially and ecologically diverse food system. We ask whether a regional-based UK food system can provide healthy and sustainable diets, and if resilience in the system can be achieved through strengthening social capital among food system stakeholders, and are uncovering the potential for more resilient food supply chains by considering the role of skills in the case of production horticulture.
By bringing together key actors in the agri-food sector this event will explore innovative new approaches to the challenges faced by the global food system.
