Advanced manufacturing

We are conducting cutting-edge research into materials, systems and transformative technologies down to the micro and nanoscale.

We are developing innovative and environmentally friendly technologies to transform engineering and economic performance in the transport, energy generation and manufacturing industries.

Our research in this area focuses on developing smart materials and structures, and sustainable manufacturing processes that help create a sustainable and greener economy. We are developing computational models, advanced cyber-physical systems, human-centred AI, autonomous systems and robotics to help build inclusive digital transformation and responsive, productive and resilient smart factories of the future.

We aim to encourage innovation and sustainability, support social and economic development, and contribute to improvements in health and quality of life.

Our industrial partners include some of the world’s most renowned global engineering companies such as Airbus, BAE Systems, Mazak, Mercedes AMG Formula One, Renishaw, Rolls Royce and SKF. We also contribute to the needs of our local regions through our collaborations with small companies in Cardiff and the UK.

Specialist expertise

Our researchers have specialist expertise in:

  • additive layer, laser and nanomaterial manufacturing
  • aerospace and automotive manufacturing
  • autonomous systems and robotics
  • composite and nanocomposite materials
  • cyber-physical systems
  • digital manufacturing and manufacturing analytics
  • human-centred AI and advanced human-machine systems
  • magnetic materials and applications
  • mechanics of solids, structures of materials
  • tribology and mechanical and structural performance
  • multiscale modelling and optimisation
  • smart materials and systems
  • sustainable manufacturing and the circular economy

Recent highlights and investments

Our Centre for Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Human-Machine Systems (IROHMS) is a £4.6M project which aims to advance human-like AI and human-robot collaborations. This interdisciplinary centre led by Engineering builds on the internationally renowned research excellence of the Schools of Engineering, Computer Science and Informatics, and Psychology.

Further successes include our High-Value Manufacturing Research Group's involvement with ASTUTE 2020 (Advanced Sustainable Manufacturing Technologies,  £10.7M for Cardiff University), an EU-backed multi-University partnership supporting greater levels of business innovation in manufacturing companies across Wales, collaborating with Cardiff Business School and the School of Medicine.

A recent investment of £1.8M into the Autonomous Systems and Robotics Laboratory, the Human-Robot Interaction Laboratory and the Renishaw Digital Manufacturing and Metal Additive Laboratories has enabled further research into advanced tribology solutions for ships, helicopters and aeroplanes.

We have also secured awards with a focus on staff mobility and exchange, including a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellowship with Airbus, Sêr Cymru-MSCA Co-funded Fellowships, and a Royal Academy of Engineering Distinguished Visiting Fellowship.
