Women in engineering
We are committed to providing an inclusive learning and research environment where female staff and students can flourish and achieve their full potential.
We promote diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace and participate in initiatives championing women in engineering and encouraging more young women and girls to consider engineering careers.
Athena Swan
In 2013 we were awarded an Athena Swan Bronze Award for our commitment to recruiting and supporting women in engineering. In response to our latest application we have once again been awarded a Bronze Award which is applicable until 2023. We will be working towards achieving an Athena Swan Silver Award and have put in place an action plan to achieve this.
Cardiff Women in Science (CWIS)
The CWIS network was established as part of an Athena Swan Initiative and aims to promote sustained progression and gender equality by facilitating multidisciplinary networking, mentoring, professional development and sharing of information between female members of staff.
Staff training
In order to give female staff the best training for management roles, we encourage staff to undertake the Aurora Leadership Programme, one of the many opportunities available to female members of staff.
We also provide Unconscious Bias training courses and encourage all staff to attend.
Aurora is a women-only leadership programme designed for academic and professional staff in higher education institutions (HEIs). It aims to encourage women to think of themselves as leaders, to develop leadership skills, and to help HEIs maximise the potential of these women.
Trevithick Women in STEM group
We also support and promote Trevithick Women in STEM group TWISTEM, a grassroots group open to staff from across the University. TWISTEM holds monthly events supporting all who identify as female, additionally working to recognise the critical contributions of men in driving gender equality. We provide support for TWISTEM includes networking lunches, Q&A sessions on women in STEM and the University, as well as organisational support.
Public engagement
We take a gender-inclusive approach towards our outreach work with local schools and the community. Teachers can use our search to find details of current activities school and college engagement activities.
We are a member of Athena SWAN, which recognises our commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine.
