Fieldwork

The Earth and environmental sciences are best experienced out in the field. Seeing something for yourself brings theory to life, whether it is imaging the seabed with sonar, fossils in a cliff face or mineral deposits in a river.

Our students complete local fieldwork in South Wales and around the UK, as well as residential field trips in locations across Europe. The field trips available to you depend on the degree programme you choose to study.

A few of the locations that we have visited in the past are highlighted below. Watch our videos for more detailed information about the geoscience field trips and the geography field trips that we hope to offer.

Fieldwork activities and assessment will be determined by social distancing requirements for COVID-19 health and safety and travel guidelines.

Fieldwork contributions

All our programmes provide hands-on experience in real field situations at no extra cost. Travel and accommodation costs are included in our course fees and students will only be asked to make a small contribution towards food and drinks for each trip. We also supply specialist equipment for working in the field and at sea, supporting the widest range of field experiences linked to classroom-based teaching.

The majority of our courses include a further residential field course as an optional module in the third year. The optional field trip is not included in our course fees.
