Eligibility criteria
In order to apply for this scholarship you are first required to submit an application for the specific postgraduate taught programme.
- The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is available to eligible students studying on selected postgraduate taught degree programmes:

- Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma awards are not included in the scheme.
- Applications to the scholarship scheme must be submitted by 23:59 UK Time on 30 April 2025.
- In order to apply, you must have already submitted an application to study at Cardiff University.

The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is available to female students from the following countries:
- Albania
- Azerbaijan
- Bosnia and Herzegovina
- Kazakhstan
- Kosovo
- Montenegro
- North Macedonia
- Serbia
- Turkey
- Uzbekistan
Terms and conditions
1. The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is awarded applied to students entering into year 1 of an eligible master’s programme. It is applied to your first year of study only.
1.1. The scholarship is intended to cover the following:
- Full tuition fees
- Annual stipend
- IELTS exam fees
- Return economy class travel to the UK from your home country
- Thesis grant
- Visa, insurance and other related and ad hoc costs
1.2 No cash alternative is available.
1.3. Five scholarships will be awarded to female students who are a passport holder and permanent resident of either Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey or Uzbekistan.
2. The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is for entry into Cardiff University in the autumn semester of academic year 2025/26 only and cannot be used any other year of entry.
2.1. If you are awarded a scholarship and wish to defer your entry to Cardiff University, your scholarship will not be transferred.
3. Future requests for further funding will not be considered under this scheme.
4. Applicants who are in receipt of any other scholarship, bursary, funding or discount will not be eligible for this scholarship.
5. The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is available for full-time, on campus programmes only.
6. You must be confirmed as an overseas student from one of the eligible countries for fee paying purposes (this information is contained in your offer letter*).
7. The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is only available to self-funded students.
7.1. If you are in receipt of funding (consisting of either tuition fees or tuition fees and living costs) from an external body which will be invoiced by the University for fees (such as a government, charity or a private organisation) you are not eligible for the Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship.
7.2 Students in receipt of educational loans are eligible for the award.
8. The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is not available to students who are coming to study at Cardiff University for a semester or full year as part of a degree at another institution.
9. The Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship is not available to students who are initially awarded the scholarship but, following enrolment at the University, subsequently transfer to an academic programme which is not eligible for the award of the scholarship.
10. Applicants who are in receipt of any other scholarship, bursary, funding or discount from Cardiff University will only be able to choose one of the awarded scholarships, bursaries, funding or discounts.
11. You must be able to satisfy all financial requirements as part of your visa application for study in the UK.
12. Please ensure that you leave sufficient time for your application and supporting documents to be reviewed and processed before the acceptance deadline. This can take up to 10 working days. *If you are assessed as eligible to pay Home fees as the result of a fee query, your fee status will be amended to Home and you will not be eligible for the Cardiff University – British Council Women in STEM scholarship.
