Our interdisciplinary research teams are developing innovative techniques to combat the ever-increasing threat to global health and security.
The award-winning work of our Geoenvironmental Research Centre is addressing the worldwide problem of the safe disposal of high-level nuclear waste. Research grants of more than £6.7m are enabling our researchers to influence the design and build of a number of new international nuclear waste storage facilities designed for long-term durability.
Models developed in our Hydro-environmental Research Centre are used around the world to predict flood risk and water quality levels for a range of extreme events. With funding from the National Environment Research Council (NERC) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), our team has developed a hydro-environmental numerical model that is used by major organisations to mitigate the risks associated with floods and water quality.
With £2.5m funding from Arthritis Research UK, we have established the prestigious UK Centre of Excellence in Biomechanics and Bioengineering. This is part of a £10m investment over the next decade to drive forward interdisciplinary research to improve the treatment of patients with arthritis.
Our researchers are reducing the health impacts of domestic waste landfill sites by addressing the levels of leachate generation. We're also cutting the mortality rate of trauma patients across South London by using mathematical models to engineer lifesaving improvements to care systems.
Working with clinicians our computer scientists are using 3D surface motion imaging systems to transform the way patients needing facial surgery are diagnosed and our Institute of Medical Engineering and Medical Physics is applying engineering principles to solve problems in medicine and health care.
Our Centre for Cyber Security Research is a leading UK academic research unit for cybersecurity analytics. Our researchers focus on the fusion of data science and artificial intelligence methods with interdisciplinary insights into cyber risk, threat intelligence, attack detection and situational awareness. It is the first Academic Centre for Excellence in Cyber Security Research in Wales.
