Trosolwg

My research interests revolve around class, education, gender, national identity, and inequality; and I employ participatory, visual, creative and narrative methods in my work with communities. I am the co-convener of the British Sociological Association’s Visual Sociology Study Group and I have facilitated a number of international workshops on the use of visual and participatory methods. I recently edited a new collection for the University Wales Press [2016], ‘Our changing land: revisiting gender, class and identity in contemporary Wales’; and I wrote a sole authored text for Routledge [2016], ‘Visual, narrative and creative research methods: application, reflection and ethics’. I was the Principal Investigator on a Welsh Government funded project exploring the educational experiences and aspirations of children who are looked after, in Wales - http://sites.cardiff.ac.uk/cascade/looked-after-children-and-education/. I have also conducted a number of projects with marginalised families in south Wales; and I am currently working on three projects related to motherhood, immigration and the education of care experienced children.

Supervision

I am interested in supervising PhD students and establishing research collaborations on applications of visual, narrative and creative methods in substantive sociological and psychological fields. I currently supervise students with an interest in:

  • Gender and higher education
  • Language and identity
  • Social services and absent fathers
  • Class, place and social mobility
  • Gender, sexuality and social media
