Green roofs for Pollinators

22 Hydref 2015

Concrete back yard
This concrete back yard will be used to showcase green roof techniques.

Staff in The Welsh School of Architecture (WSA) have supported Julian Rees of Pollen8 in his successful bid for "Tetto Verde" funding.

This funding will enable a number of green roofs to be planted in South Wales, providing safe habitat and forage for pollinators.

One of the projects will involve developing a demonstration green "roof" at ground level for the charity MIND's venue in Neath. Their previously concrete back yard would be difficult to convert to a conventional garden, but provides an opportunity to use green roof techniques and showcase them at an accessible level.

A proposed planting structure was developed by WSA personnel with plants suitable for green roofs, beneficial for pollinators throughout the season and attractive to people.
