The annual Nation Radio Sports Awards, with Sport Cardiff, is soon upon us and the shortlists are out for the various categories.
This year we have three HPP students shortlisted in two categories. Sarah Llewelyn and Lewis Oliva are up for Cardiff Sport Student of the Year and Jake Heyward shortlisted for Junior Sports Personality. All three students have had successes both nationally and internationally in their given sport this year.
Sarah has had a successful year having representing Wales at both U21 and Senior level. Sarah captained Wales U21 to Netball Europe silver medal as well as being awarded player of the tournament, which was a fantastic achievement against the best netballers in Europe. She has been selected as part of the Wales Commonwealth Games long squad and this month represented Wales Seniors at Netball Europe. Sarah balances a demanding netball schedule with studying medicine and has managed to juggle both extremely well during her first year at Cardiff University.
Lewis has had a successful year both on a national and international stage. He became National Keirin champion as well as BUCS sprint champion and BUCS record holder. Lewis was a prominent cyclist in the Tissiot UCI World Cup series this year with his best result in Glasgow where he claimed bronze competing against some of the top cyclists in the World. Lewis's performances during the World Cup series was enough to secure his spot on the Great Britain team for the World Track Cycling Championships. Lewis made his World Championship debut in April in Hong Kong which this year is the highest international level competition and biggest competition in the track cycling calendar. For Lewis, this award will be attempting 3 out of 3, already winning BUCS Sportsman Of the Year and the Cardiff University AU Sportsman of the Year in 2017.
Jake Heyward has just started at Cardiff University this September, having had huge success on the track this year. He became European U20 1500m Champion and broke the Welsh U20 1500m record this summer. Jake has many titles to his name including British U20 1500m champion, Welsh 800m champion and was also BBC Wales Young Sportsman of the Year 2016.
