Academic scoops paper of the year award

Dr Antonio Ioris, senior lecturer in Human Geography at Cardiff University’s School of Geography and Planning, has been awarded the Geographical Review’s Best Paper award for 2017.

The article, Places of Agribusiness: Displacement, Replacement, and Misplacement in Mato Grosso, Brazil, was selected by the Geographical Review's editorial team as the standout paper from all of those published during 2017.

Dr Ioris will receive his award during a ceremony that will take place at the Geographical Review Annual Lecture in April 2018. The event will be held during the American Association of Geographers annual meeting in New Orleans.

Responding to news of his success, Dr Ioris said: “I’m honoured by this recognition of my work and research into the political-economy, including issues of place-making, during the expansion of the agriculture frontier in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, in the southern tracts of the Amazon. This is one of the main areas of agribusiness expansion in the world today and my research has offered a critical interpretation of socio-spatial trends and mounting risks and inequalities.”
