9 Awst 2017
Academics from the School of Law and Politics made a number of presentations at the World Conference of the International Society of Family Law which took place last month.
The conference entitled 'Family Law and Family Realities' took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands from 25-29 July 2017.
Dr Sharon Thompson, Senior Lecturer in Law, delivered a paper on the 'Gold-Diggers of Family Law'. This developed her work, published in the Onati Socio-Legal Series, which looked at the development and influence of the gold-digging trope in family disputes.
Dr Leanne Smith, Senior Lecturer in Law, presented co-authored work on the emerging market in private law disputes discussing her work on fee-charging McKenzie Friends. This research, funded by the Bar Council, found that McKenzie Friends vary in their motivations with the bulk of their work carried outside of courts.
Dr Julie Doughty, Lecturer in Law, spoke about the law on adoption and a child's right to family life. This built upon her long-standing research on the topic including the Wales Adoption Cohort Study.
