Head of School elected to Learned Society of Wales

Professor Ian Hall, Head of School of Earth and Environmental Sciences Research Professor, has been elected a Fellow of the prestigious Learned Society of Wales.

Professor Hall’s research interests lie in the generation of innovative high-resolution palaeoclimate reconstructions and their integration with climate models. This work provides an understanding of climate variability in its natural state, and also the dynamics of processes involved in ocean circulation and abrupt climate shifts. In 2016, he sailed as co-chief scientist of the International Ocean Discovery Programme Expedition 361 ‘South African Climates’. He is a former director of the Climate Change Consortium of Wales, member of the executive committee of the 'International Marine Process Reconstruction Study' (IMPRESS/IMAGESII) programme, and is chair of the NERC BOSCORF Steering Committee.

The Learned Society of Wales (LSW) was established in 2010 to promote research excellence in Wales to a global community. With more than 460 Fellows from all subject areas, the LSW brings together a host of successful and talented professionals who assist the Society in its work. Fellows serve on Society committees and working groups, represent the LSW nationally and internationally, and provide independent and expert advice to Government.

Election is highly competitive as candidates must progress through a rigorous five-stage election process, including an examination of their achievements in their relevant fields.
