Phoenix UniCamp 2017

This summer, students from Cardiff University will join forces with students at the University of Namibia to inspire learners; helping raise aspirations and encourage them fulfill their potential.

The two universities are teaming up with the J.A. Nel School, in Keetmanshoop, southern Namibia, to deliver a two week ‘UniCamp” workshop with an overarching theme of ‘Heart Health Namibia’. UniCamp will allow learners to participate in four different ‘subject streams’: Healthcare; Computer Science; Journalism and Media; Business and Entrepreneurship.

Elizabeth Beukes, Head teacher at the J.A. Nel School says: ‘Our kids are coming from very poor backgrounds; their self esteem is not there – they don’t know where they are heading’.

UniCamp, which will be led by Cardiff University’s Widening Participation Manager, Scott McKenzie, will bring together up to 10 students from each university with 40 learners from the school. Scott says: ‘We will use the overarching theme to deliver workshops and academic content. In addition this, we will offer activities, games and sports to help develop the confidence, self-esteem, communication skills and literacy of the learners. We hope the programme might encourage some of the learners to progress to university’.
