Showcasing and debating diverse research
22 Chwefror 2017
Cardiff University’s 14th Public Uni event was held at Chapter Arts Centre on Friday 10 February 2017.
The Public Uni series is co-organised by Cardiff Business School’s Dr Marco Hauptmeier and Harriet Lloyd from the School of English, Communication and Philosophy. It provides an informal environment for academics to translate their current thinking and research into bite-size chunks, for a public audience.
Five academics from across the University took to the stage to share their insights on a wide range of topics. Each speaker is given just 10 minutes to impart their research in a digestible format, paying particular attention to the social, economic and political impact of their work. The latest group to take on the Public Uni challenge were:
- Dr Rebecca Scott (Cardiff Business School): Why pain is proving popular in modern consumption experiences
- Dr Dawn Knight (School of English, Communication and Philosophy): The first large-scale corpus of Welsh words as used in everyday life
- Professor Stephen Disney (Cardiff Business School): The dynamic behaviour of supply chains: the bullwhip effect
- Mr Dominic De Saulles (School of Law and Politics): Why the Judges said no to the government triggering Brexit without
- Dr Grace McCutchan (School of Medicine): What stops people going to the doctor with a symptom of cancer, and what can we do to encourage people go earlier?
More than 50 people were in attendance which facilitated an engaging and enthusiastic debate around the topics under discussion.
The next Public Uni event will take place at 7.30pm, Friday 31 March 2017. If you would like to present at one of the forthcoming Public Uni events, please get in touch with Marco Hauptmeier or Harriet Lloyd.
