African Union Commission group appoints Cardiff lecturer as independent expert

Dr Edwin Egede, Senior Lecturer in International Law & International Relations, has recently been appointed as an independent expert of the African Union Commission ad hoc experts group.

The ad hoc experts group has the remit to develop and draft Annexes to the African Charter on Maritime Security, Safety and Development (Lome Charter), which was adopted by the African Union Assembly in 2016 at Lome, Togo. The Annexes, when adopted, would form an integral part of the Charter. Dr Egede was appointed in January 2017 based on his expertise in international law of the sea and his writings on Africa and deep seabed mining, as well as the 2050 Africa's Integrated Maritime (AIM) Strategy. Dr Egede attended the drafting and working sessions of the Ad Hoc experts group at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa in January and thereafter made a presentation on the draft Annex on Non-living marine resources & Energy to a Validation Workshop attended by various stakeholders from different member States of the African Union.
