Academics scoop prestigious book prize in Paris

Cardiff Business School academics, Dr Robert Mason and Mr Barry Evans, have won the Prix des Associations at the Les Plumes des Achats for their book, The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the challenge at Tesco.
The Plumes de Achats is a prize ceremony organised by four leading supply chain associations (ACA, X-Achats, FASC and ADRA) and HEC Business School. The awards honour and recognise the best publications related to purchasing and supply chain and were held in Paris on 5 December 2016.
Dr Mason and Mr Evans’ book The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the challenge at Tesco was released in late 2015 and was competing against a field of 29 other books for the title of best purchasing and supply chain publication of 2016.
The Lean Supply Chain: Managing the Challenge at Tesco, published by Kogan Page, explores how Tesco employed lean thinking, loyalty and simplicity to grow under a determined supply chain logistics strategy and achieve its dominant UK and global position. It also looks at the company’s continuous improvement and current developments to maintain its competitiveness.
The book is informed by the authors’ expert knowledge and includes real-life examples of the success of Tesco strategies. It includes an assessment of how Tesco is dealing with contemporary challenges and market changes to maintain their position as the UK's largest retailer.
Dr Robert Mason said: “This is a tremendous honour and Barry and I are very proud that our work has been recognised in this way. The book is a robust and intensively researched work which examines how Lean principles and philosophy facilitated the incredible growth of Tesco to a position of such dominance. It is informed by our many years of research and practical experience as well as several projects conducted in partnership with Tesco.”

Dr Mason is a senior lecturer in the Logistics and Operations Management section at Cardiff Business School. Barry Evans worked for Tesco in their Supply Chain Development team for a number of years and then joined Cardiff Business School’s Lean Enterprise Research Centre. He is now retired but conducts some part-time teaching for the Logistics and Operations Management section.
