Peter Reynolds Composer Studio

The Vale of Glamorgan Festival will be partnering with the Cardiff University School of Music to launch the Peter Reynolds Composer Studio for aspiring composers.

Named in memory of the well-known composer, lecturer and long-time supporter of the Festival who passed away suddenly in October this year, the Peter Reynolds Composer Studio will be run alongside the 2017 main festival from Friday 22 May to Friday 26 May under the artistic direction of festival founder and composer, John Metcalf, and senior lecturer in composition at Cardiff University School of Music, Robert Fokkens.

The programme offers anyone looking to pursue a career in composition the opportunity to work with some of the composers and ensembles taking part in the 2017 festival and tap into a rich resource of expertise.

Participants will benefit from direct access to a number of composers – including one-to-one tutorials, talks and seminars, the chance to write for a leading professional ensemble, a performance and recording of their work, free access to Vale of Glamorgan Festival concerts and events, and excellent networking opportunities.

The programme is divided into two modules, the first featuring Grand Band, a six-piano “supergroup” based in New York City, and the second featuring the Marsyas Trio, a flute, cello and piano ensemble dedicated to the commissioning and performance of new works. Seminars, tutorials and presentations will take place within the School of Music at Cardiff University, while Festival events take place at venues throughout Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

The Vale of Glamorgan Festival has each year presented an international celebration of classical music, and since 1992 has focussed on celebrating the work of living composers exclusively - a policy which sets it apart from all other UK festivals and which has brought it international respect and renown.
