Adopt a Composer
13 Medi 2016
PhD composer Martin Humphries has been chosen for the prestigious Adopt a Composer scheme.
Adopt a Composer is funded by PRS for Music Foundation and the Philip and Dorothy Green Trust and run by Making Music, in association with Sound and Music and BBC Radio 3.
This initiative pairs amateur choirs, orchestras, and ensembles with a composer for one year. The composer will write a piece for the group to premiere and the group has the opportunity to contribute to the creation of a new work by some of the UK’s most promising composers.
Martin has been paired with Birmingham’s ‘On the Edge’ Fusion Youth Orchestra and will be mentored by composer Fraser Trainer. He said: “I’m excited to have been paired with this orchestra. Over the next year we will be working together to create an exciting, innovative and rewarding piece of music for the participants.”
Martin, who completed his undergraduate and postgraduate taught studies at the School of Music, was awarded an AHRC Research Council Studentship to fund his doctoral studies across Cardiff University, the University of Southampton and Bath Spa University. He is exploring ways of creating rewarding contemporary music for amateur musicians and in community settings.
