Marshall Scholars visit Cardiff University

Over 60 of the USA's most talented and committed students have taken part in a visit to Cardiff University today. The Marshall Scholarship is for intellectually distinguished young Americans to study in the UK and gain an understanding and appreciation of contemporary Britain.

The scholarship allows them to undertake two years' graduate study at the institutions of their choice in the UK. It is one of the highest honours a US undergraduate can receive, and many of the students go on to become future leaders or hold positions of high office in the USA.

This visit, organised by the International Affairs Office at the Welsh Government was designed to provide Marshall Scholars currently studying in the UK an opportunity to spend time at a Welsh academic institution and to find out more about Wales and its culture.

The programme for the Cardiff University visit included a welcome speech by Pro-Vice Chancellor for International and Engagement, Hywel Thomas and 'A Rough Guide to Welsh' talk from Professor Sioned Davies of the School of Welsh. As a reminder of home for the American scholars, the Stars and Stripes flew over the University's main building for the duration of their visit.  

Cardiff University has previously hosted Marshall Scholar visits in 2007 and 2010 as part of a partnership agreement with the Marshall Scholarship Foundation. It is hoped that the visit will encourage future Marshall Scholars to consider studying at Cardiff University, one of Britain's leading teaching and research institutions and a member of the Russell Group of the UK's leading research universities.
