Inaugural award for Cardiff University science technician

Steven Baker from the School of Physics and Astronomy has won the Higher Education Academy Physical Sciences Technician of the Year Award at a ceremony held last night (17 April). The awards were held as part of their annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) conference at the University of Birmingham.

Steven's award is one of the Higher Education Academy STEM's inaugural Technician of the Year Awards. Nominees were asked to demonstrate how their skills, actions and good practice have improved the experience of students and how they have engaged and communicated with staff and students. The winners receive £150 and a certificate.

Dr Janet De Wilde, Higher Education Academy's Head of STEM said:

"As the national body for enhancing learning and teaching in higher education, the HEA recognises that technicians, in the field or in the laboratory, have a very important role in supporting the student learning experience.

"I'd like to extend my congratulations to all the winners, and I look forward to meeting them at the conference."

The HEA STEM conference continues in Birmingham today. The Higher Education Academy is a national body for learning and teaching in higher education working with universities and other higher education providers to help bring about change in learning and teaching. Their activities focus on rewarding and recognising excellence in teaching, bringing together people and resources to research and share best practice, and helping to influence, shape and implement policy – locally, nationally, and internationally.
