New Athena SWAN awards

Four of the University's academic schools have been granted Athena SWAN bronze status for their commitment to supporting the careers of women in science.

The Schools of Biosciences, Dentistry, Engineering and Medicine were all recognised for their success in developing employment practices and promoting equality in areas such as organisational culture to further and support the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) departments.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Colin Riordan said: "These new awards reinforce Cardiff's commitment to gender equality.

"Recognising and rewarding excellence and removing barriers to career progression are key to ensuring our continued success as an institution. All four schools should be very proud of their new status and I am delighted they are getting the recognition they deserve."

The Athena SWAN Charter awards have been running since 2005, recognising the commitment of the higher education sector to addressing gender inequalities and tackling unequal representation of women in science.

In 2009, Cardiff University was one of only 19 universities nationwide to have been awarded a prestigious bronze award under the Charter for its commitment to women in science.

The Schools of Nursing and Optometry both hold silver status and the Schools of Psychology and Chemistry hold bronze.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Elizabeth Treasure added: "This new recognition for four of our largest academic schools shows Cardiff is continuing to take great steps in this area.

"As a University we are committed to equality of opportunity and inclusiveness across the institution and this news demonstrates just that."
