Sir David Attenborough to give the 2013 Hadyn Ellis lecture

5 Gorffennaf 2013

Attenborough

Britain's best-known natural history film-maker, Sir David Attenborough, will be delivering this year's Hadyn Ellis Distinguished Lecture, the sixth in the series.

Sir David's career as a naturalist and broadcaster has spanned nearly five decades, and he has produced several landmark BBC series, which have introduced millions of people to the wonders of the natural world.

Sir David's lecture (18th September, 2013) will centre on archival film about naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace's ocean voyage to the Malay Archipelago and his pioneering observations of the bird of paradise. Sir David has described Welsh-born Wallace as "one of the greatest of all field naturalists".

His lecture marks the start of a series of University events to mark the centenary of Wallace's death in 1913, which includes a free Public Lecture series, organised by the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

The Hadyn Ellis Distinguished Lecture Series was established in memory of Professor Hadyn Ellis CBE, who made a significant contribution towards establishing the discipline of cognitive neuropsychiatry and was instrumental in establishing Cardiff as one of the leading research universities in the UK.

Tickets for the event have now sold out. However, we will also be live streaming the lecture into another lecture theatre on campus for those who still wish to view Sir David's lecture. If you wish to be informed when tickets are released for the live streaming, please add yourself to the waitlist at cuattenborough.eventbrite.com

Cardiff University is delighted that all proceeds from ticket sales will go towards the creation of the Alfred Russel Wallace Travel Prize. Wallace was one of the greatest of all field naturalists and it is fitting that a prize for travel and fieldwork bears his distinguished name. The prize will be awarded to an undergraduate of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences who submits the best proposal for a travel or fieldwork project.

This year's Hadyn Ellis lecture has been kindly supported by The Waterloo Foundation.
