Celebrating Community Partnerships

The Widening Access Team at the Centre for Lifelong Learning will be celebrating the success of its partnership with Student Volunteering Cardiff and Communities First at this weekend's Family Fun Day.

The event, which will take place on Saturday 7 June in Butetown, will celebrate the participation and learning achievements of all the students who attend the area's Homework Clubs which are supported by student tutors from Cardiff University.

The event has been organised by ACE Cardiff, SEF Cymru, Riverside Homework Club and Education Centre Wales who are all located in the BRG Communities First area in Cardiff.

It is expected that around 70 to 80 children will attend the day with their families, who will be integral in celebrating their children's learning journey and enjoying the day's activities.

Student Tutor Project Coordinator, at the Centre for Lifelong Learning, Liena Abulaban said: "We are really looking forward to supporting this weekend's event which will showcase the hard work of the students and the Cardiff University Student Tutors in particular".

One of the Student Tutors, Rachel Ware said: "I have learnt so much about teaching and they say the best experience you can get is in a classroom - so homework clubs are surely the next best thing! It is so hard to get hands-on experience, so this has been invaluable. It definitely played a big role in securing my place in University to study a PGCE!"

The Cardiff Homework Club project gives Cardiff University students the opportunity to volunteer as part of a team that supports children aged 11-18 in their learning. Volunteers can progress to become Team Leaders and expand their skills set to include leading and managing small teams of volunteer tutors.
