Welsh Varsity 2014
4 Ebrill 2014
The biggest student sporting event in Wales, the Welsh Varsity, will enter its 18th year on Wednesday 9thApril, 2014.
Teams from Cardiff and Swansea universities will compete against each other in over 20 sports, ranging from football and cricket to taekwondo and ultimate frisbee, culminating with the now infamous men's rugby match.
Advertised as a 'Grudge Match of Epic Proportions,' the game will take place at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium, in front of thousands of cheering fans, for the fourth consecutive year.
In 2013, over 16,000 people witnessed Swansea's 21 - 13 victory.
The reigning champions will undoubtedly be looking to hold on to the title but will face stiff competition from the Cardiff University team, whose captain, James Thomas, said: "Training is going well and everyone is really excited for what promises to be a brilliant day. It will be a close game but hopefully, with the support of Cardiff students, we can win back the trophy!"
Past student players have gone on to play both nationally and internationally, such as Wales and Lions centre Dr Jamie Roberts (Cardiff University) and Wales and Lions lock Alun-Wyn Jones (Swansea University).
S4C will broadcast the match on its Rygbi Pawb show live on its website, with commentary in both Welsh and English, and the highlights that same evening on television.
Presenter Morgan Isaac said: "The whole day is a colourful celebration of sport but the big rugby game is the pinnacle. It attracts a big crowd and the atmosphere is amazing. They can generate more noise and passion than supporters of the regions."
Tickets are on sale now, priced at £12.50 for students or £15 for non-students.
