Small World: A Debate on Media Coverage of Global News

News directors, editors and journalists will meet in Cardiff University this week to discuss the media’s coverage of global news.

The panel discussion, chaired by Professor Richard Sambrook and delivered in partnership with the Welsh Centre for International Affairs (WCIA), will welcome many of the UK’s senior journalists.

The panellists will be asked to consider the impact of media coverage of international issues on public opinion and government policy and how journalistic instinct, political stance, proprietors, public opinion and other factors drive media content.

Joining the panel will be Lindsey Hilsum (Channel 4 News), Martin Shipton (Media Wales), Jonathan Levy (Sky News) and Sean Ryan (The Sunday Times).

Professor Richard Sambrook, Director of Cardiff University's Centre for Journalism said, “We are delighted to partner with the Welsh Centre for International Affairs for this discussion. As politicians debate extending air strikes to Syria and world leaders discuss climate change in Paris it's an important moment to consider how the media reports international events.”
