Queen’s Birthday Honours

Members of the University community have been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for their exceptional contribution to society.

Professor Lynne Boddy, from the School of Biosciences, has been awarded an MBE for services to Mycology and to Public Engagement in Science.

Since the mid-1970s, Professor Boddy has researched the ecology of wood decomposition and has pioneered work on the fungal community structure.

Professor Boddy has also been a keen advocate for science throughout her career, participating in several engagement activities aimed at communicating her research to a much wider audience, through talks, events and the media.

Professor Antony Bayer, from the School of Medicine, was also awarded an MBE for services to Healthcare.

Professor Antony Bayer is a professor of Geriatric Medicine and Director of the Memory Assessment Service at Cardiff and Vale UHB, University Hospital Llandough.

Professor Bayer’s research focuses on the epidemiology, assessment and clinical management of cognitive disorders and neurodegenerative disease, especially Alzheimer's disease. His interests also extended to the clinical trials of new pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments for dementia and the organisation of services.

One of the youngest recipients this year was Cardiff University’s 19-year-old mechanical engineering student Lauren Shea.

She was awarded the British Empire Medal for services to promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to young people.

As a schoolgirl, she was named by the Women's Engineering Society as one of the top 50 young female engineers in the UK.

Amongst the wider University community, David Pountney CBE (Hon 2015) received a knighthood, whilst Griff Rhys Jones (Hon 2009), Bettany Hughes (Hon 2011) and Sarah Waters (Hon 2016) all received an OBE.

Cardiff University alumnus Mr Raymond Colbourne (BSc 1980, UGDip 1982) was awarded an MBE for public service.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Colin Riordan said: “We are very proud to see the dedication and work of our community recognised. Many congratulations to everyone who has been honoured.”
