Science in Health LIVE turns 25 in style

Almost 800 year 12 students from right across Wales were treated to 2 days of tours, talks and interactive exhibitions as we celebrated the 25th anniversary of our Science in Health LIVE event.

Since 1995, Cardiff University’s School of Medicine has welcomed sixth form pupils from across Wales with the aim of engaging and inspiring them with the exciting science underpinning clinical management of disease and medical research.

This year pupils were once again treated to laboratory tours which allowed them to gain a feel for the excitement and challenges of biomedical research; visited a wide range of interactive exhibitions; listenend to a series of talks on various hot topics in biomedical science; and were able to meet and question scientists and clinicians from across the whole spectrum of scientific and healthcare careers.

To mark the occasion of the 25th anniversary the school arranged for a couple of renowned keynote speakers to deliver the opening plenary talks.

On Tuesday 13 March Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz delivered his lecture 'Health Care - 25 years of progress but more to come?'. It was an enthralling look at how far health care has come, the direction it needs to go in the future and how we can all have an impact on this.

Professor Borysiewicz is a Welsh immunologist and served as the 345th Vice Chancellor of Cambridge University.  He also served as Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council from 2007- 2010 and presently is Chair of Cancer Research UK.

Wednesday's plenary was by Professor Anthony Campbell. '25 years that revolutioned medicine' was a fascinating look at some of the major medical achievements of the last 25 years.

Professor Anthony Campbell is an honorary professor and longstanding Chair of the Science in Health group.

The event is always extremely well received by both the pupils and teachers alike and over the years it has become clear that Science in Heath LIVE, alongside other Science in Health initiatives, is having a positive impact on influencing career choices and supporting pupils to realise those choices in terms of gaining university entrance.

To close the day an interactive polling session was held that gave the pupils the opportunity to put their questions to a panel of experts which consists of existing undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, clinicians and alumni of the school.
