CITER Soc Scientific Workshop 2018

The annual CITER Soc scientific workshop took place on Wednesday 12 December 2018 in Hadyn Ellis, Cardiff University. The theme of this year's workshop was "combating ageing diseases in modern medicine" and was organised by postgraduate committee members from the Cardiff Institute of Tissue Engineering and Repair Society (CITER Soc). The workshop is targeted at year 12 / 13 science pupils.
The workshop was well attended with sixty four pupils from six secondary schools including Cardiff High School, Radyr Comprehensive School, Bishop of Llandaff Church in Wales School, Whitchurch High School, King Henry VIII School, Abergavenny and St Josephs R.C. High School, Newport together with twenty two CITER members.
Many thanks to our keynote speaker Professor John Hardy, Institute of Neurology, University College London who delivered a talk on "Genomics of Neurodegeneration" and our external industry led guest speaker Professor John Sinden from ReNeuron Ltd as well as colleagues from Cardiff University for providing informative talks. The Cardiff University talks were delivered by Dr Emma Lane, school of Pharmacy and Pharmacaeutical Sciences, Professor Cathy Holt, school of Engineering, Professor Phil Stephens, school of Dentistry and Dr Sophie Gilbert, school of Biosciences.
During registration, break times and the lunch break students had an opportunity to participate in our interactive outreach activities including maggot racing, virtual rehabilitation movement games, surgical skills, interactive ocular diseases and to test knowledge of the human anatomy. There was also a stand representing the Cardiff University Arthritis Research UK Biomechanics and Bioengineering Centre.
Going forward CITER is looking to engage more with secondary schools and therefore if you are a PhD student member looking to gain experience in delivering presentations and stand alone workshops to pupils in year 12 and 13 studying science please contact the CITER office:
