Engagement through History – Cardiff Bay’s Coal Exchange

Welsh School of Architecture Senior Lecturer Dr. Juliet Davis has contributed to media-based discussions around the significance and possible futures of Cardiff’s Coal and Shipping Exchange.
Dr. Juliet Davis contributes to debates around the future of the dilapidated Cardiff Coal and Shipping Exchange – a large Victorian building by the architect Edwin Seward set within the former commercial and banking district of Cardiff Bay. Her involvement began with a design studio project with Master of Architecture (MArch) students in 2014-2015 considering reuses and architectural propositions for the Exchange and she has gone on to research the history of the building’s design, development and decline.
As its condition has attracted controversy and been more widely publicised, she has contributed to media-based discussions around its significance and possible futures:
- Nick Broomfield’s BBC4 documentary 'Going Going Gone' (May 2016) focusing on disappearing heritage in Cardiff and Liverpool,
- Chris Wood’s article ‘Cardiff's neglected coal boom era area 'in danger' for BBC Cymru Wales (Jan 2017)’
- 07 February 2017 edition of the ‘Chronical Show’ for Radio Cardiff, amongst others.
