Access to some of the best technology and facilities allows our researchers to undertake cutting-edge dementia research.
Our researchers come from a range of different disciplines, and we are linked to flagship University Research Institutes which have state-of-the-art resources.
Hadyn Ellis Building
This facility contains a 12,500 square foot laboratory with dedicated rooms for biobanking and pre-PCR work, as well as areas for research on genomics, tissue culture, proteomics, RNA analysis, genetically modified organisms, radioactivity and microscopy.
Our equipment includes Illumina HiSeq 4000, Ion Proton and Ion Torrent next generation sequencing systems, Fluidigm C1 single cell preparation system, Illumina IScan and BeadXpress genotyping platforms, Life Technologies Open Array technology and Qiagen's Pyromark pyrosequencing system.
For data analysis, we use a high performance computing infrastructure and the Cardiff University central Advanced Research Computing@Cardiff (ARRCCA), specifically for NGS analysis.
The Hadyn Ellis Building also has a dedicated NHS clinic space, with lab-based psycho-physics testing and patient-centred research supported via the National Centre for Mental Health.
CUBRIC
Cardiff University’s Brain Research Imaging Centre, opened in June 2016, is one of Europe’s premier brain imaging facilities.
It contains multiple MRI scanners, including an incredibly powerful ultra-high field scanner. There is also an MEG scanner, three Electroencephalography (EEG) labs, five brain stimulation labs, 10 cognitive testing labs and a clinical research facility.
Systems Immunity Research Institute
Facilities provided by this Research Institute include both advanced laboratory and computational resources, along with access to clinical research and tissue banks.

Clinics and trial units
The Cardiff Huntington's Disease Centre at Cardiff University is one of the leading centres in the UK for initiating and coordinating research into Huntington's disease. The clinic team also provides specialist advice and care for people who either have, or are at risk of developing, Huntington’s Disease, and their families and carers.
South East Wales Trials Unit at the Centre for Trials Research within Cardiff University is a UKCRC registered clinical trials unit. It designs, conducts, analyses and publishes clinical trials and other well-designed studies, from pharmaceutical trials to the evaluation of complex interventions.
The Clinical Research Facility (CRF), located at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW), is a 12-bed unit providing a crucial facility for the translation of basic biomedical science developments into clinical practice.
Health and Care Research Wales’ Neuroscience Research unit (NRU) is located on a neurology ward at UHW. This four-bedded neuroscience translational supports surgical trials of intracranial therapeutics, non-surgical trials of regenerative medicine research and specialised clinical trials support across epilepsy, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and stroke as well as other neurological diseases.
