Why we have changed the format

The LRN committee of the CILT and the Cardiff LRN 2020 organising committee has had to make some difficult decisions about how to approach this year’s conference.

Circumstances have dictated that we can no longer proceed with any certainty regarding a full conference. We are however mindful that Stream Leads and abstract submitters have taken time and effort in preparing for the conference.

Therefore, to support our disciplinary community and give us the opportunity to meet and share our research, the decision has been taken to scale back this year’s event to an online event which will be based around accepted abstracts and known as the e-LRN 2020 Special Web Conference.

There will be no fee to join the conference and the platform we will use is Zoom.

Web conference overview

With the current coronavirus pandemic, and even the impact of the financial crisis of 2008 still being felt globally, yielding economic, social, political and environmental consequences, there is a need for academics to influence both the practice and theory of logistics in order to yield more resilient and sustainable business models.

The core purpose of future research on logistics needs to be to not only provide economic improvements but also generate social benefits for a wider range of stakeholders, not just a few commercial organisations.

New ways of working need due consideration of the technological innovations that emerge in ever frequent cycles typified by the Internet of Things, organisational and process forms that allow for greater flexibility and dexterity in operational activities. Recent examples including right shoring decisions, and people matters that address such issues as poverty, inequalities in pay, exploitation in the form of modern-day slavery, and waste, such as in food, water and energy.
