Science for policy: a European Perspective

Everyone is invited to join a networking event and panel debate on ‘Science for Policy: a European perspective’ at Swansea University in September.

This exciting event, jointly hosted by AE Cardiff Hub and Swansea University, will take place on Tuesday 4th September at the University’s Bay Campus and is aimed at anyone who would like to find out more about the relationship between science advice and policymaking.

The event will start with a light lunch giving all attendees the opportunity to make new contacts. Following lunch, our expert panel will be examining the opportunities and challenges of providing science advice for policymaking. We will look at models of scientific advice, including the new European Scientific Advice Mechanism, explaining how it actually works. We will also explore the role of public engagement in the process.

Our speakers are:

Professor Peter Halligan, Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales

Professor Peter Halligan is the new Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales. He leads on scientific activities and advice within Welsh government, and also works closely with the Chief Scientific Adviser and departmental Chief Scientific Advisers in the UK government.

Professor Ole Petersen CBE FRS MAE, Director of the Academia Europaea Knowledge Hub Wales

Academia Europaea, an international academy of world-leading scholars, is a partner in the consortium of pan-European academies (SAPEA), providing independent, interdisciplinary and evidence-based scientific advice on policy issues to the European Commission. The Wales Hub of Academia Europaea, hosted at Cardiff University, is responsible for coordinating and delivering evidence reviews, on behalf of Academia Europaea.

Professor Mike Bowker, Professor of Surface Science and Deputy Director of the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, Cardiff University

Following a request from the European Commission for science advice on the climate mitigation potential of carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) technologies, experts from across Europe, including Wales, delivered an evidence review report, published in April.

Wendy Sadler MBE, Founding Director of science made simple and Lecturer in Science Communication and Engagement, Cardiff University

How can more food be obtained from the oceans in a way that does not deprive future generations of their benefits? In an innovative approach to public outreach, an infographics-based leaflet set out to engage a large international audience with the key messages of the published science-based reports, including a call to action.

Dr Dion Curry, Senior Lecturer in Public Policy, Swansea University

The Initiative Managing Policymaker-Academic Cooperation and Knowledge Transfer (IMPACKT) is an interdisciplinary project based at Swansea University that aims to create sustained and proactive dialogue between policymakers and academics working in a variety of fields.

Professor Robert Evans, School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University

Professor Evans has undertaken extensive work on the nature of expertise and the role of science in society, in collaboration with Professor Harry Collins. Jointly-authored books include Rethinking expertise and Why democracies need science.
