Research students are understandably focused on the production of, and promotion of the outputs from their doctorate, with a view to finding a job. This two day retreat will examine the responsibilities of scholars to produce something other than outputs that will allow personal progression.  In a series of sessions with leading socio-legal scholars we will examine the responsibilities we owe to our wider communities.  More specifically we will interrogate the political choices that scholars make in their choice of project, methodology and theoretical frame and how they deal with the many consequences of their research.  Led by a group of well known scholars, but highly interactive in nature, you will be invited to explore the good and bad choices that the workshop leaders have made and their own stories of success, failure and surprise. They will open their memory banks, reveal the underbelly of their research and consider how they and others have lived with the consequences.  Students will be set selected academic outputs of the workshop leaders to read in advance of the session in order to facilitate in-depth discussion.

This event is designed for students working in the field of socio-legal studies in the second, third and fourth years of their PhD (or part time equivalent).  Generous support by a consortium of Cardiff, LSE and Queen Mary ESRC funded doctoral training centre and the Cardiff Centre of Law and Society means that this event is free for ESRC funded students apart from travel.  Fifteen bursaries for everything but travel are also being made available with the kind support of the Journal of Law and Society and the Socio-Legal Studies Association.

Please note only those awarded bursaries or funded by the ESRC will be eligible to attend. If you are not ESRC funded then any places booked will be provisional until the award of a bursary is confirmed.

Delegates who came to our first ESRC funded socio-legal residential masterclass in Windsor 2016 commented:

‘Thoroughly enjoyed the event and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do this.  This event has already had a significant impact on how I see my research and no double will continue to shape my thinking in future.  I’d love to do this again!’

‘Thank you everyone!  An amazing masterclass in a beautiful location!  The ‘retreat’ format was really useful, a ‘safe space for socio legal scholars’.

‘I am leaving knowing a lot more about socio-legal research and also feeling as part of a growing academic trend /community.  Thank you for organising!’

Further Details

  • Gregynog is a historic house with Grade 1 listed gardens set in the heart of rural Montgomeryshire. One of Wales’ premier country estates, and the former home of art collectors and public benefactors Gwendoline and Margaret Davies, it offers a welcoming setting in which people of all ages and abilities may discover, experience, participate in, and be inspired by the arts and natural environment. It is one of Wales’s most unexpected hidden treasures, whose name has echoed down the years since the first elusive references to it by the 12th century poets of the Welsh princes. See further
