Each of our five research sections represent a critical mass of people with similar research expertise and interests, taking advantage of our strengths and renewed opportunities.
Biological Chemistry
Focusing on a range of problems at the interface of chemistry, biology and medicine, our research is both of fundamental interest and importance. Examples are, probing enzyme motions crucial for catalysis, and of more immediate societal relevance, such as the generation of new antimicrobial, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and pest control agents, as well as developing molecular tools.
Catalysis and Interfacial Science
The Catalysis and Interfacial Science Section focuses on cutting edge topics, that are both of fundamental academic importance and of relevance and significance to the modern world.
Materials and Energy
Focused on the application of experimental and computational techniques to understand fundamental properties of materials, the development of new techniques for investigating properties of materials, and the advancement of industrial applications of materials particularly in relation to energy sectors.
Molecular Synthesis
Integrating the design, synthesis and characterisation of both organic and inorganic molecules. We specifically focus on the development and application of new and flexible chemical methodologies to synthesise a breadth of systems, and exploit the use of enabling chemical tools to deliver efficient and versatile processes.
Spectroscopy and Dynamics
Developing and utilising spectroscopic techniques, including electron paramagnetic resonance and cavity enhanced spectroscopy as well as modern computational methods, for application to species of chemical and biological interest, such as understanding the structure and dynamics of reactive intermediates, catalysts and biomolecules.
Our state-of-the-art catalysis facility supports world leading research in chemical sciences.
