This year's Green Gown Awards saw 133 projects from 83 institutions shortlisted!
Which is why we're honoured to have won in the Campus Health, Food and Drink category for our plant-based café, Green Shoots.
We couldn't have done it without you. Why? All of the improvements made to Green Shoots Café were based on student and staff feedback.
So what did we do?
Change our menus for the better
- With 68% of our customers requesting plant-forward and healthy menu options, exclusively vegan and vegetarian menus were introduced, featuring whole grains, seeds and pulses to promote healthy eating.
- More in-house food-to-go items were created, allowing better control over cost, ingredients and nutrition while ensuring high-quality taste.
Introduced community dining
- Monthly Supper Clubs became a hit, with our team serving over 700 free and plant-forward 3-course meals annually. These have allowed students to come together to enjoy sustainable and delicious dishes whilst tackling cost-of-living.
- Speaking of cost-of-living, 'Sizzle on a Shoestring' has enabled students and staff to gain access to a hot nutritious and healthy meal every week by offering a plant-based main meal for just £3 served in their own reusable containers.
Prioritised local, seasonal food
- Thanks to 71% of survey respondents, the Fan Hapus food trailer was brought in to bring a taste of Wales to campus, celebrating the cuisine, seasonal ingredients and supporting the local community.
- We began working with Castell Howell, a family-run business which has grown to become Wales' leading independent food service wholesaler who share the same sustainable values as us.
