Sustainable food and drink on campus

Did you know?

We care about what ends up in your cup and on your plate, which is why we're all about making sustainable choices when it comes to food and drink.

Where our food comes from

We are committed to bringing you seasonal, healthy menus every single day. This means that all the eggs we use are free-range (we're proud holders of the Good Egg Award), and our milk is always British, with dairy-free alternatives available across campus.

All of our meat is Red Tractor as standard - meaning it has been produced to the highest standard and is 100% British - and we use local Welsh meat wherever possible. With our products not traveling as far, we know that we're saving significant emissions on transport whilst supplying the highest quality ingredients.

See fish on your plate? We only use fish from sustainable sources, making sure that species identified as most 'at risk' by the Marine Conservation Society stay off your plate.

Not to mention our diverse range of Fairtrade products, making sure fair prices are paid to all producers.

What we're doing for the planet

Working with Menus of Change, we're always aiming to reduce our carbon footprint and source sustainably.

According to CleanChoice Energy, animal agriculture is responsible for 18% of greenhouse gas emissions (more than all transportation emissions combined)! Which is why we've incorporated more plant-based meals in our menus, including our fully vegan and vegetarian café - Green Shoots.

We have also introduced a reusable cup scheme which has already cut disposable cup waste by 51%. Simply bring a reusable cup for your hot drinks in our cafés and save 35p every time while helping the planet - it's a win, win.

How we're fighting food waste

Guardians of Grub state that if food waste were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of greenhouse gases, so we are tackling this on campus from in our kitchens to your leftovers.

All of our food waste gets composted off-site by waste contractors so it doesn't end up in landfill, and even our waste kitchen oil gets recycled into biofuel for delivery vehicles. How cool is that?

You can join the fight too. Got the Too Good To Go app? Use it to get discounted surplus food from our cafés and restaurants to join the fight. Or love coffee? Take some of our used coffee grounds home for your houseplants or skincare.

Here, sustainability isn't just a buzzword - it's part of everything we do. So you can be sure that your plate is good for you, and for the planet.
