Chinese language & culture course for teachers

From 26 November 2024, we are offering primary and secondary teachers in Wales the chance to take a free teacher training programme.

Our Chinese Language & Culture for Teachers course has been designed with busy teaching professionals in mind. By the end of the programme, participants will not only have gained a solid basic knowledge of Mandarin Chinese but have a portfolio of resources and lessons to use themselves.

The course

The 28-week online course will be held for one hour a week with a Cardiff Confucius Institute tutor. 22 of those weeks will be focused on learning basic Mandarin with a view to supporting your pupils with current or future learning, or simply discovering the language for your own development.

The language classes will be interspersed with six culture-focused lessons, where you will learn about a specific element of China such as health & well-being, food and festivals. After each of these sessions, you will be given access to PowerPoints and resources/activities prepared by our tutors which you can use as standalone sessions with your classes if you wish.

How it works

The course is divided into three stages, allowing teachers to join at a level appropriate to them:

Stage 1. Chinese language & culture course for teachers - TASTER

26 November to 17 December (4 weeks)

Stage 2. Chinese language & culture course for teachers - PART I

14 January to 8 April (12 weeks)

Stage 3. Chinese language & culture course for teachers - PART II

29 April to 22 July (12 weeks)

Progression

Once you have completed the course, you will have the opportunity to progress onto Cardiff University’s Chinese for Beginners II course in September 2025. This would be fully funded by Cardiff Confucius Institute, and allow you to work towards a ten-credit level 3 or 4 module in Mandarin Chinese.
