The Candlin Lecture and Award

The Candlin Lecture and Researcher Award is dedicated to the memory of Professor Christopher N. Candlin (1940 - 2015).

Professor Christopher N. Candlin was the co-founder of the ALAPP Conference and the founding co-editor of the Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (JALPP).

The Candlin Lecture

The lecture aims to engage with one or many of the conceptual and methodological themes at the interface of applied linguistics and professional discourse studies, with a particular emphasis on research uptake and impact. At the ALAPP 2018 Conference, the Candlin Lecture is delivered by Theresa Lillis.

The Candlin Researcher Award

The award comprises a certificate and a free subscription to the Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (JALPP) for a year. The eligibility criteria are as follows: the author must currently be a postgraduate or postdoctoral researcher; the paper will have been accepted for oral or poster presentation at the previous ALAPP conference; and the theme falls broadly under the interface of applied linguistics and professional discourse studies.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. A full-fledged written version is submitted to Srikant Sarangi (sarangi@hum.aau.dk) copied to Bettina Jensen (bettinaj@hum.aau.dk), no later than 31 January 2019.
  2. A panel of peer reviewers will assess the quality of the submissions against a set of guidelines and decide on the winner
  3. The winner will be announced at the ALAPP 2019 conference; and the winning submission will be published in a future issue of the Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice (JALPP).
