Understanding Mental Health in Muslim Communities
This project aims to help reduce inequalities in mental health support by promoting a better understanding of mental health issues in Muslim communities.
Mental health issues affect Muslims in Britain more than other faith communities, yet they are less likely to access formal support for these problems – and when they do, their rates of improvement are lower. A better understanding of Islam and Muslims by mental health practitioners, and of mental illness by religious practitioners, can reduce these inequalities.
This project supported the funding of the accreditation by the Royal College of Psychiatrists of a new online course titled ‘Understanding Mental Health in Muslim Communities'. Learners of this new course launching in November 2022 will include frontline health, social care and religious practitioners.
