Navigation Colliery Polytunnel Project

The former Navigation Colliery in Crumlin is a site of national importance as a rare surviving example of a Welsh colliery.

A range of historic buildings are currently being repurposed to provide education provision, workshops, a heritage visitor centre and social facilities.

The first phase of the Navigation Colliery Polytunnel Project will convert a shipping container on the colliery’s ground into an education and wet-weather hub for staff, volunteers and for young people from local Pupil Referral Units and the ARC Group, who employ and train young people on the site to develop building and maintenance skills.

The same young people will be involved it phase 2 of the project to create and develop two polytunnels in a community-led grow-to-market initiative. The project will support the independent living skills of young people in the local area, developing a curriculum and programme of study to enable them to fulfil their potential.

This project is a collaboration between Cardiff University, Navigation Colliery Trust, ARC Group and local education providers.
