Multilingual Mentoring in Primary Schools

A Welsh Government-funded project that tackles the decline in take-up of foreign languages in schools.

Modern Foreign Language Mentoring aims to tackle the decline in the take-up of foreign languages in schools through a mentoring approach proven to inspire, enthuse, and encourage pre-GCSE learners to choose to study international languages.

The SWCEP funding expanded the project to primary school learners, supported teacher development by providing insight into multilingual teaching practices, and developed a network between partner higher education institutions and primary schools, allowing learners an early insight into life at university.

Since the application period opened for students and primary schools, the project was delivered alongside the University of South Wales, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and Cardiff Metropolitan University. It engaged four primary schools based in Cardiff, received applications from 66 university students, and engaged 300 learners from participating primary schools.
