Reading Identities – Darllen Hunaniaethau
Developing digital educational resources on reading identities in Welsh literary texts in the classroom.
Based on previous research led by the School of Welsh to investigate the pedagogy of interpreting literature in the context of diversity and inclusion, this phase of the project co-developed a model for generating digital educational resources on reading identities
Activities and main milestones of the project included:
- conduct market research with Welsh Secondary School pupils and teachers to identify needs and models for developing and sharing project resources
- create a prototype of the resources to share with participating teachers for feedback
- in line with feedback, edit and convert learning resources drafted in previous phases of the project into digital educational resources alongside the Welsh publishing company, Atebol
- develop strategic networks and partnerships that will help support and transfer knowledge around the digital toolkit nationally (e.g. Education Consortia Wales)
Atebol will publish the resource on the Welsh Government’s HWB platform. Further school engagement events are planned for the Eisteddfod 2025.
The project team will monitor the use and impact of the resource via an online questionnaire embedded into the digital toolkit to build evidence to influence education curriculum design and policy.
Identity
As a result of the project, the Project lead, Siwan Rosser, joined WJEC’s GCSE Welsh Consultation Group to contribute to developing a proposed new GCSE Language and Literature curriculum.
Identity is one of the curriculum’s core themes, and the Reading Identities tool will align with the requirements of the new qualification.
Curriculum for Wales
In the medium and long term, the project’s outputs will have the potential to influence curricular decisions and Welsh language syllabuses in line with the aims of the Curriculum for Wales and the proposed changes to GCSE Welsh Language and Literature qualifications (from September 2025).
The project team will continue to have consultative discussions with WJEC and the Welsh Government, with the aim of revising the GCSE Welsh syllabus to widen the range of identities and perspectives represented by literary set texts.
